A detailed guide on Scaled Score Calculation in SAT with Weighted Mean
Contents
The Digital SAT on EdisonOS uses a weighted scoring system that gives more credit for correctly answering difficult questions. This ensures fair assessment and better reflects student ability.
The Digital SAT is divided into two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section has a minimum score of 200 and a maximum of 800. The cumulative of these two sections results in the final score ranging from 400 to 1600.
1. Digital SAT Assessment Structure
- Each assessment has two sections
- Each section has two modules (baseline and adaptive)
- The first section (Reading and Writing) consists of a total of 54 questions (27 questions in each module) and requires a total of 64 minutes (32 minutes for each module) to complete.
- The 2nd section (Math) consists of a total of 44 questions (22 questions in each module) and 70 minutes (35 minutes for each module) to complete the section.
2. Setting up Assessments (Admin Dashboard)
- Admins can create separate sections for each assessment.
- Admins can set the difficulty level for each question (no difficulty, very easy, easy, medium, hard, very hard).
- Admins add each question to a specific section in the assessment, along with options, correct answers, explanations, tags, difficulty levels, and hints.
3. SAT Weighted Mean Score calculation on EdisonOS
SAT Score Ranges
Reading & Writing (RW): 200-800 points
Math: 200-800 points
Total SAT Score: 400-1600 points (sum of both sections)
Difficulty Weight System
EdisonOS follows a “Difficulty level - Weight Value” mapping system to calculate the weighted mean score using the raw score. Below is the mapping system for each difficulty level:
Difficulty Level |
Weight Value |
Very Easy |
1 |
Easy |
2 |
Medium |
3 |
Hard |
4 |
Very Hard |
5 |
No Difficulty |
3 (Medium) |
Each question must have a difficulty tag. ‘No difficulty’ is a default option provided. In any case, if ‘No difficulty’ is not replaced with any of the other difficulty levels offered, EdisonOS assumes the medium difficulty level for that particular question.
The weighted mean score will be calculated based on the difficulty level set by the admin for each question.
- For every correct answer a student provides, the raw score is 1.
- For every incorrect answer a student provides, the raw score is 0.
- For every question skipped by a student, the raw score is 0.
- After a student attempts to answer all the module questions, the weighted mean score is calculated for that section based on its difficulty level.

Step 1: Calculate Weighted Mean Score
Question | Weighted Sum (Numerator) |
Weighted Sum (Denominator) |
Q1 | 1 × 2 = 2 (Raw Score * Weight) | 2 (Weight) |
Q2 | 0 × 3 = 0 | 3 |
Q3 | 1 × 4 = 4 | 4 |
Q4 | 1 × 5 = 5 | 5 |
Q5 | 0 × 1 = 0 | 1 |
Q6 | 1 × 3 = 3 | 3 |
Total = 14 | Total = 18 |
Weighted Mean Score (unbiased): (14 / 18) = 0.778 (77.8%)
Step 2: Convert to SAT Scale (200-800)
Formula: UnbiasedScore = min_score + (max_score - min_score) × weightedMeanScore
For Math Section:
UnbiasedScore = 200 + (800 - 200) × 0.778
200 + 600 × 0.778
200 + 466.8
666.8 (without rounding)
step size = 10
Score after rounding = Round(666.8 / 10) × 10 = 670
The scaled score for the above section, which contains six questions, is 670.
Note: Scaled score depends on the following parameters
- The difficulty level of the question is crucial because it gives the weightage.
- Min and Max scaled score sections (the Min and Max scaled score values vary for SAT, PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9)
Disclaimer: The scaled score calculation is based on EdisonOS and does not replicate the official College Board scoring algorithm.
